Richard Restak asserts in "The New Brain" (Rodale Books, 2003) that "ADD/ADHD isn't so much a disorder as it is a cognitive style." With this in mind, and through much trial and error, the author of this article, a second-grade teacher at Hood-Case Elementary School in Alvin, Texas, provides suggestions to keep in mind when one has ADHD children in the classroom. These suggestions include: (1) Set a consistent daily schedule; (2) Limit distractions around the student's work area; (3) Explain directions at least twice, then have the child repeat them; (4) Give silent cues that only the teacher and the child know; (5) Limit the amount of work given at one time; and (6) Be positive.
