Progressive Relaxation Training: A Manual for the Helping Professions.
Bernstein, Douglas A.; Borkovec, Thomas D.
This manual sets forth in detail the therapist behaviors necessary for effective application of this relaxation training technique. The materials presented are designed to provide therapists in many disciplines with the skills they need to train their clients in relaxation. A background to relaxation training is presented, and the basic procedures of progressive relaxation are discussed. Also provided is an outline of those situations in which relaxation training has been beneficial and those situations in which it has proved less useful. The authors emphasize that progressive relaxation training should be part of a joint effort by therapist and client which takes place within the context of a positive therapeutic relationship.
