While conflict resolution programs in the elementary schools have been in existence for the last decade, few studies have provided quantitative data concerning the effectiveness of such programs. A study was conducted which used interviews and surveys to focus on the development, implementation, and results of a Conflict Manager program at one elementary school. Possibilities for mediation in schools without formal programs were also considered. This paper presents the results of this study and traces the history of the mediation program at Greer Elementary School in Charlottesville, Virginia. It discusses how and why the program was started, lists major goals of the program, and explains the pilot project which involved third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students. The training of personnel is described and the basic format for mediation is presented in outline format. Feedback obtained from questionnaires and interviews from the student mediators, the general student body, and the faculty at Greer Elementary School is discussed. This descriptive feedback supported the conflict resolution programs as a viable way of reducing tension; enhancing student self-esteem; increasing student responsibility; increasing instructional time; and improving the skills involved in effective problem solving, communication, teamwork, and critical thinking.
