Management in Education, v20 n1 p11-16 2006
The National College for School Leadership (NCSL) Programme, Leading from the Middle (LftM), was introduced in 2003 and was designed to help improve leadership at middle levels in schools and to impact on the effectiveness of teams of teachers in improving pupil progress. This article is a report on an evaluative study of how the program has influenced middle leaders' self-perceptions of leadership skills. It describes those perceptions, highlights their nature and, from that information, goes on to discuss the methodological implications of the study in planning an agenda for future research on the topic. Based on responses from 710 respondents, both qualitative and quantitative data are used to highlight the impact of the LftM Programme. The findings suggest that the program had a positive influence on middle leaders' perceptions of their confidence as leaders; their awareness of their team; knowledge of team roles; ability to delegate and coaching skills.
