The Parent Teacher Team: Establishing Communication between Home and School

In this article, the author, gives advice to parents of children with special needs on establishing valuable communication with their teachers and special education team. To establish communication, the author suggests that parents: (1) Join the parent teacher team and learn about the child's school and programs; (2) open the lines of communication; (3) decide how to communicate; (4) be an active parent by attending open house nights and parent-teacher meetings; and (5) follow up by fulfilling requests and ask for and offer suggestions. The author concludes by reminding parents that keeping a positive and helpful outlook will make for an easier school year for the student as well as the parent.
