The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent the use of e-collaboration tools when used as a primary channel of communication affected virtual team members' trust and motivation, in a spatially dispersed environment. Structured interviews were conducted with 18 project managers, who were responsible for leading virtual projects in an organizational environment. The two central themes of the study were identified as: (a) frequent communication and (b) multi-tasking. From this study, the factors that contribute to or hinder the development of trust and motivation within a virtual team environment were found to be: (a) the selection of e-collaboration tools, (b) social adaptation, (c) quality, (d) time constraints, (e) the development of synergy or motivation, and (f) the development of trust.
