This book explores teaching techniques and adaptations that have proven effective in teaching mathematics concepts and skills to students with learning disabilities, with a focus on reasoning methods rather than algorithmic calculation. Emphasis is placed on topics that potentially can or commonly do cause the most difficulty for students with learning disabilities. Changes for this third edition include increased attention to problem solving, decision making, mental math, and the use of calculators. A chapter on problem solving provides tips and exercises on determining the correct operation to solve the problem, determining whether answers are reasonable, determining proper sequences, recognizing patterns, and comprehending the mathematical meaning of words and symbols. Guidelines for using microcomputers in mathematics instruction are provided, followed by specific methods for teaching lessons on money and time, number and place value, basic arithmetic operations, and whole number computation. Techniques for extending understanding and application of fraction and decimal concepts are provided as well.
