Another new title addressing the issue of teacher retention, this practical guide is full of "real-life" strategies and suggestions for coping with the challenges facing teachers today. An excellent resource for beginning teachers, it includes chapters on classroom management, relationships with colleagues and students, setting goals, curriculum, training, working with parents and the community, and the importance of staying musical. This book is divided into four sections. Following a preface the first section is introduced by by Barbara W. Baker's "'What'll I Do?'--The Daily Challenge of Teaching Music." Following this chapters include: (1) "What Do I Teach?"; and (2) "How Do I Teach All This?" The second section, "'I Will Survive' Classroom Management" is introduced by Moe Turrentine. Following this chapters in the section include: (3) "How Can I Get the Students to Behave?"; and (4) "How Can I Stay Organized?" The third section, "'Heart and Soul' Life beyond the Classroom" is introduced by Scott D. Laird and then presents the following chapters: (5) "What Personal Characteristics Do I Need?"; (6) "What If I Don't Know Enough?"; (7) "How Can I Stay Musical?"; and (8) "How Can I Take Care of My Needs?" Finally, the last section of the book, "'People' Personal Relationships" begins with an introduction by Brett Smith followed by chapters: (9) "How Can I Build Better Relationships with My Students?"; (10) "How Can I Get Help from My Colleagues?"; and (11) "How Can I Build Community Support?" Also included in the book are an appendix of MENC Survey results; and a list of contributors.
