The Role of Emotional Intelligence Skills in Teaching Excellence: The Validation of a Behavioral Skills Checklist
Harville, Pamela Cherie
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Texas A&M University - Kingsville
The role of emotional intelligence in effective teaching can be developed and enhanced through the use of an assessment instrument as a new evaluation and learning process for teachers. This involves a formative learning process for the qualities associated with excellent teaching characteristics and behaviors for use with teacher evaluation processes and teacher preparation programs. The "Teaching Excellence Assessment" (TEA; Nelson, 2009) has been created for this purpose. The study concerned the validation of the TEA. The articulation of specific characteristics and attitudes of teachers who are considered effective as evaluated by student-centered processes was lacking in higher education. The current study discovered and identified the characteristics and attitudes of effective teachers from students' perspectives. The research study supported the need for authentic teacher assessments with the "Teaching Excellence Assessment" (TEA; Nelson, 2009) and its associated attitudes and behaviors. Findings were explored through the TEA Likert-type scale instrument along with open-ended questions. The research was a mixed methods study with statistical procedures Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients, factor analysis and qualitative emerging theme analysis. The procedures were used for data analysis to answer the research questions. Item analysis and the calculation of Cronbach's alpha were used to estimate the reliability of the "Teaching Excellence Assessment" (TEA; Nelson, 2009). Validity was explored through correlation of the TEA with the "Teacher Behavior Checklist" (TBC; Buskist, Sikorski, Buckley, & Saville, 2002; Keeley, Smith, & Buskist, 2006). The sample for the study was students in higher education at a South Texas university. Findings of the study provided information for faculty related to the role of emotional intelligence skills in teaching effectiveness and student learning. In addition, the study provided information that may be important for teacher preparation programs to strengthen learner-centered teaching with a more complete understanding of teaching excellence from the perspective of students. The "Teaching Excellence Assessment" (Nelson, 2009) was validated and made ready for use as an instrument to determine effective attitudes and behaviors of emotional intelligence skills for excellent teaching in higher education.
