Producing Well-Prepared Teachers
Gardner, Sandra
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v71 n6 p42-46 Feb 2006
In this article, the author discusses the importance of having more experienced and more prepared teachers for students to learn more. Here, the author presents two books: (1) A Good Teacher in Every Classroom; and (2) Preparing Teachers for a Changing World. A Good Teacher outlines current research on effective teaching, citing necessary areas of teacher knowledge. A Good Teacher seeks teacher education curriculum shaped by what teachers need to learn and how they learn, through a process of study, reflection, and application. Two studies in Preparing Teachers show a longer supervised experience with graduated responsibility that ties into theory produces better-qualified new teachers with more self-confidence in their ability in the classroom. Among other things, the author discusses the Teacher Excellence for All Children Act of 2005. The TEACH Act provides financial incentives to encourage quality teachers and principals to enter and stay in the profession with competitive salaries, tax breaks, and up-front, prepaid tuition assistance for high-achieving undergrade who commit to teaching for four years. TEACH also promotes teacher advancement by increasing salaries of exceptional teachers who assume responsibilities such as mentors and master teachers.
