A Model for Recruiting the New Community College Student.
Pitt Community Coll., Greenville, NC.
This proposal represents a systematic and research-based effort to revitalize traditional recruiting practices and to establish a new recruitment model for reaching the nontraditional student in North Carolina two-year colleges. It includes activities of and findings from a model adult recruiting project. A project overview includes the objectives and a comparative description of the traditional and nontraditional student. Subsequent sections discuss initial organization for adult recruiting by an institution, population mapping--both external and internal--for targeting purposes, and establishment of an advisory group. The focus of the next section is targeting populations, e.g., senior citizens, technical scholars, occupationally mobile individuals, persons interested in education/work force reentry, and displaced homemakers. Enrollment factors are highlighted, and a marketing assessment index is provided. The next two sections concentrate on institutional marketing planning and the development of a marketing plan. Topics include invisible marketing and trigger mechanisms. The Pitt Community College (PCC) Preliminary Marketing Plan and a marketing request form are provided. Sample adult recruiting strategies (advertising strategies) developed by PCC during the model project are then presented. Appendixes include a model institutional checklist, a population mapping bibliography, a student recruitment survey, consultants' reports, and a model for recruiting the new community college student.
