Interviewing International Students to Understand the Process of Expatriate Acculturation
Peterson, Mark
Marketing Education Review, v24 n1 p59-62 Spr 2014
Globalization is the most influential trend of the early twenty-first century. However, many students have had limited direct contact with cultures other than their own. The following teaching innovation targets such students to give them an experiential learning opportunity about the process of acculturation for expatriates. This is accomplished through a semistructured interview assignment with an on-campus international student who is not known to the interviewing student. An in-class debriefing including small group discussion and full-class thematic analysis of the students' interview experience complete the "People Go Global" project. Students report an increased desire to pursue overseas travel as a result of the project.
