School-Based Collaborative Teams: An Exploratory Study of Tasks and Activities
Phillippo, Kate; Stone, Susan
Children & Schools, v28 n4 p229-235 2006
This study reports findings from a content analysis of the activities and tasks of a school-based problem-solving team. Analyses of observational data collected over the course of five months found that team tasks and activities fell into the following five clusters: (1) needs identification, program development, and planning; (2) intrateam communication; (3) case construction; (4) mutual training and support; and (5) accountability checking. The team appeared to play crucial roles in enhancing service efficiency and quality, building capacity for systemic problem identification and subsequent intervention, and providing opportunities for team member professional development. The ability of the team to attend to both individual student and school systemic issues suggests that this approach to meeting students' psychosocial needs warrants further empirical study and practice development.
