Curricular Issues in Physical Education Teacher Education

Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v75 n8 p47 Oct 2004
The physical education teacher education (PETE) curriculum is an area in need of continual assessment, revision, and refinement. Physical education teacher education programs share the ambitious goal of producing effective, novice physical educators. As the understanding of the instructional issues associated with preparing teachers continues to improve, the need for systematic, curricular innovation becomes increasingly apparent. In many traditional PETE programs, a variety of courses are used to deliver subject-matter knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in a relatively uncoordinated fashion. This collection of courses may fail to optimally facilitate the prospective physical educator's professional development. Alternatively, PETE programs may benefit from the design and implementation of research-based curricula that employ various educational interventions within a logical, systematic conceptual framework. The purpose of this article is to present an issues-oriented framework upon which PETE curricular discussion can be more uniformly based. The framework's organization includes the following four traditional areas of professional preparation: (1) foundational subdisciplinary coursework, (2) curriculum and instruction coursework, (3) PCK coursework, and (4) field placement experiences. It is hoped that a common framework of this sort will be professionally beneficial both as a stimulus and as a focusing agent for future PETE curricular investigation.
