Meeting the Needs of Urban Youths in Columbus City Schools
Deglau, Dena A.; Barnes, Diane
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v80 n8 p41-43 Oct 2009
With 55 percent of the 53,400 students on free and reduced lunch programs, a 78 percent mobility rate, and a diverse population, Columbus City Schools (CCS) in Ohio faces the challenges common to other urban districts. In spite of the challenges, CCS has made a long-term commitment to engage students in high-quality physical education and physical activity. Achieving this goal has required a multidimensional approach. The district has continued to focus on this objective by (1) having a district advocate, (2) engaging and training teachers, (3) building sustainable professional development through the development of teacher leaders, and (4) fostering university and community collaborations. This article discusses the impact that each of these approaches has had within the district.
