High School Equivalency Testing in Arizona. Forum: Responding to Changes in High School Equivalency Testing
Hart, Sheryl
Journal of Research and Practice for Adult Literacy, Secondary, and Basic Education, v4 n3 p48-50 Win 2015
For decades, the state of Arizona has used the General Educational Development (GED) Test to award the Arizona High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma, as the GED Test was the only test available, recognized and accepted in the United States as the measure by which adults could demonstrate the educational attainment equivalent to high school completion. In the fall of 2013, Arizona issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the selection of one or more assessment(s) aligned to college and career readiness standards to be used in awarding the Arizona HSE Diploma. In January 2014 the Arizona State Board of Education awarded the contract for HSE Testing in Arizona only to GED Testing Service, LLC. The new computer-based 2014 GED Test was implemented as the only assessment used to award HSE diplomas in Arizona. Since the implementation of GED 2014, Arizona has experienced tremendous decreases in both participation and pass rates associated with HSE testing, as described herein. As one of three briefs in this issue's "Forum: Responding to Changes in High School Equivalency Testing," this article offers a snap shot of Arizona's response to providing instruction and assessment that reflect the latest surge in what it takes for adults to prosper. [For the other two articles in this Forum, see EJ1083366 and EJ1083367.]
