Remembering the Backstory: Why Keeping and Promoting School Archives Matters
St. Germain, Janine
Independent School, v75 n3 Spr 2016
As a consulting archivist, the author always thinking about the "backstory" of a place, how an institution's legacy is cultivated and preserved, and how all of the stuff a school collects over time can reveal the culture of the place. School archives are by far a favorite "genre" of archive for the author, primarily because she finds them easy to leverage in a variety of applications. The author has found alumni to be terrific "super fans" of school archives, contributing material with generous enthusiasm. Among other things, these kinds of donations can be a wonderful tool for any development director wishing to cultivate connections with the alumni base. In this article, the author, school archivist for St. Bernard's School in New York, extols the value of cultivating and preserving an institution's legacy through pictures, memorabilia, print records, and anecdotes.
