Given expectations for higher standards teachers must find ways to improve family involvement and build a community atmosphere within the classroom. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the implementation of a family involvement program into a first grade classroom. Epstein's six types of parent involvement formed the theoretical foundation for the research. The family involvement program involved classroom programs, communication, and providing families with resources to use at home. Four research questions guided this study, including understanding the activities teachers can use or design to improve family involvement in the home, the types of activities that bring families into the classroom, how family involvement affects classroom achievement, and what classroom teachers can do to improve family involvement. Students and their families of one classroom comprised the sample; observations, interviews, a journal, Reading Recovery reading levels (a measure of reading proficiency), and SuccessMaker computer software scores (measures of language arts and math achievement) were collected throughout the study. The qualitative data were gathered and analyzed by themes. Four themes emerged including opportunities for families and students to work together at home, communication, community, and in school programs that teach skills and strategies to assist students at home. The quantitative data were analyzed with a paired samples t test. The findings revealed a statistically significant change in the students' scores in reading levels and SuccessMaker scores as a result of family involvement. Implications for positive social change include increased family presence in the classrooms and schools, improved partnerships between teachers and families, and increased student achievement.
