Career Services Perspectives on the Use of Portfolios in the Teacher Employment Process: A Survey
Boody, Robert M.
Education, v130 n1 p67-71 Fall 2009
Portfolios are widely required in teacher education programs. One of the rationales often given for their use is their value in the employment process. The issue addressed in this study--the use of portfolios for employment--is separate from the issue of whether portfolios are useful for teacher credentialing or within a teacher education program itself. This study is concerned solely with the use of portfolios in the hiring process. The study randomly sampled 16 institutions from the list of colleges and universities belonging to the Midwest Association of Colleges and Employers (Midwest ACE), of which 15 provided responses. The career services professionals who were interviewed by phone in the study represent a wide range of institutions of higher education. The interview protocol specifically asked to interview the person who spent the most time with education. The interview protocol asked a number of questions related to career advising and teacher employment portfolios. A summary of findings is presented.
