The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) was passed in 1974 and revised in 1996. This act, also known as the Buckley Amendment, guarantees parents access to their children's education records and limits the disclosure of those records. The revised law regards most information that teachers, school administrators, and education officials maintain about students in a tangible format--whether in electronic, photographic, or paper files--as an education record. FERPA also restricts the purpose for which psychiatric examinations, testing, or treatment may be used. In this article, the author discusses accessibility of student records under FERPA and provides tips that will help principals ensure that their schools are complying with FERPA.
