"Working." A Teacher's Guide to a Vocational Reading Program Based on Selected Interviews Contained in "Working" by Studs Terkel.
Eakin, David; And Others
This teacher's guide is intended to help vocational English teachers implement a program based on Studs Terkel's book "Working," a collection of more than 100 interviews with people about their jobs. The 30 interviews selected for inclusion in the curriculum either illustrate occupations taught in the schools or deal with occupations related to those for which students train or which they can attain. One objective of the program is to prove that English can make a real contribution to career education and enhance the vocational competence of students in vocational programs. Each interview has been handled in two pages, one for the teacher and one for the student. The teacher's guide is divided into five areas: a short summary of the narrative, answers to the true and false section, possible answers to the discussion questions, suggestions for using the projects, and suggested vocabulary. Each student activity sheet contains true or false statements, questions for discussion, and a project or projects. Student activities may be completed in or out of class, written or orally, by individuals or groups. (YLB)
