Geology Is. Preliminary Edition. Volumes I and II, Including Activity Sheets.
O'Fallon Township High School District #203, IL.
Presented in this document is a full-year, two-semester course in geology for high school students. Composed of 5 units and 20 chapters, the course emphasizes the practical aspects of geology with special attention to the relationship between geoscience processes and the environment and to the application of scientific and technical expertise to problems facing society. The text is divided into two volumes, one for each semester, and supplementing each volume is a set of student activity sheets keyed directly to the various chapters of the text. Topics of the three units of volume 1 are: (1) what geology involves and why it is important; (2) the specific materials of which the earth is made and their special importance to people; and (3) how to visualize the earth by reading maps and understanding their uses. The two units of volume 2 deal respectively with: (1) the various processes involved in the structure and composition of the earth and their interrelationships; and (2) the forces that affect the earth's surface, for example, water, wind, and ice. In both volumes each chapter begins with a chapter outline, followed by a list of related activities, a set of "geo facts" (interesting trivia related to the topic under study), and a list of relevant terms. Concluding each chapter is a series of problems and questions related to the information provided in the main text. (AA)
