Caring Closes the Language-Learning Gap
Borba, Mary
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v75 n2 p21-25 Oct 2009
The gap in academic achievement between English speakers and English learners continues to concern educators, parents, and legislators. Rising expectations for literacy and the increasing number of students from diverse backgrounds contribute to this achievement gap. In this article, the author discusses a variety of strategies for reaching out to families of English learners. Educators must take the first step toward entering the world of the immigrant family in a caring and respectful manner. A sensitivity to the needs of immigrant families contributes to building a strong bridge between languages and cultures. When children and their families are proud of who they are, children are more likely to do well in schools. Investing in developing caring relationships between school and the families of English learners pays off in parental support for education and improved learning for students.
