Lifestyle Management Program: Promoting Cardiovascular Health: in Community College Campuses.
Castro, Felipe G.; Jichaku, Patrick
The Lifestyle Management Project is a health promotion project and research study conducted in the spring of 1984 at five Los Angeles junior college campuses. Its goal was to increase knowledge of cardiovascular disease (CHD) risk factors among 400 to 2000 junior college students in each campus. This was done via five risk factor activities: blood pressure screening, stress management seminars, a stop smoking activity, a graded exercise program, and a reduced cost heart-healthy lunch. Participants took a multiple choice pretest and "cashed" it in for a Health Passport, which served as a program guide with dates and places of program activities. Analyses were conducted on pre-test variables: perceived risk of CHD before age 50 (PRISK); risk factor knowledge (KT); risk factor attitudes, e.g., exercise (AEX); behavior frequency during the past week, e.g., exercise (FEX); and behavioral intention, e.g., to exercise (IEX).
