Early Learning Canada: Workshop Leader Guide [and] Participant Resource [and] Trainer Manual. Learning & Reading Partners Adult Learning System.
Estey, Nancy; MacIsaac, Maitland; Rendell, Sandra
Based on the understanding that the capacity to learn is optimized in the early years, Early Learning Canada (ELC) is a community workshop program for parents and adults who work with children from birth to age 6 and their families to facilitate life-long learning. This workshop leader guide explains the ELC principles, examines learning styles and the teaching-learning process, offers suggestions for workshop preparation, and explains the experiencing learning cycle: briefing, learning activity, and debriefing. Each of the eight 2.5-hour workshops presented is organized so that the leader and participants share learning experiences and discuss a life management topic; the leader then introduces the topics and related learning activities and leads the experiencing learning cycle. The topics covered in each workshop include: (1) understanding learning, including the parents' role, multisensory learning, the role of play, and learning versus performance goals; (2) more about learning, including multiple intelligences, motivation, memory, learning styles, and developmental stages; (3) thinking processes, including observing, comparing and contrasting, identifying patterns, and predicting; (4) more about thinking processes, including labeling, categorizing, cause-effect relationships, sequencing, prioritizing, and making decisions; (5) language development, including communication and parents' role; (6) more about language development, including early listening, speaking, reading, and writing; (7) health and learning, including resources, influences, and values; and (8) a framework for learning (physical, environmental, social, emotional, neurological), focusing on factors affecting learning and understanding the world through inquiry, exploration, discovery, and making connections. Each workshop except the first also covers a life management topic such as eating, sleeping, relationships, child care, toilet learning, stress, self-esteem, television, and behavior guidance. A reading list of 45 references completes the guide. (KB)
