Strawberry Square. Thirty-Three Programs in Music Education for Children in Kindergarten and First Grade. Teacher's Guide.
Brown, Sheila; Griffin, Nancy
This teacher's guide accompanies a series of television programs in music education for kindergarten and first-grade children. The story line of the programs centers around the revitalization of a once run down neighborhood called Strawberry Square where people had forgotten how to sing, dance, and live joyful lives. The program builds upon the five important musical activities of singing, moving, playing, listening, and creating. Information provided for each of the 33 lessons includes a description of the story presented on television, an explanation of the importance of the lesson with regard to social and personal growth and music objectives, an outline of major themes, and learning activities and teaching methods. Students are involved in many different kinds of activities. For example, they go on walks with parents and listen for different kinds of sounds, learn to sing new songs, take part in movement dramatizations, experiment with body sounds, learn rhyme verses, learn about Native American culture and the strong relationship to nature held by all American Indian tribes, and read and discuss poetry. The guide also contains a list of resource materials. (RM)
