Helping Children Cope when a Loved One Is on Military Deployment
Allen, Megan; Staley, Lynn
Young Children, v62 n1 p82-87 Jan 2007
Military deployment is a temporary assignment overseas or within the United States. During these assignments, families must live apart from their loved one in the service. Many teachers are unfamiliar with the unique lifestyle and challenges faced by families during military deployment. A safe and caring learning environment is essential in helping children affected by deployment build coping skills. This article shares strategies teachers and schools can use to help support the children and families of deployed men and women who are active military or reserve unit members. In this article, the authors present suggestions to support these affected children. These suggestions include the following: supporting children emotionally, supporting children through changes in the curriculum, supporting caregivers at home, supporting deployed parents and supporting a parent's return. The authors also include lists of children's books and Web resources about separation or military deployment. (Contains 10 online resources.)
