10 Suggestions for Enhancing Lecturing
Heitzmann, Ray
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v75 n9 p50-54 May 2010
Criticism of the lecture method remains a staple of discussion and writing in academia--and most of the time it's deserved! Those interested in improving this aspect of their teaching might wish to consider some or all of the following suggestions for enhancing lectures. These include: (1) Lectures must start with a "grabber"; (2) Lectures must be interactive; (3) Lectures must not rehearse the textbook; (4) Lectures must represent the latest thinking and research; (5) Lectures must contain humor; (6) Lectures must humanize history and the social sciences; (7) Lectures must respect the audience by utilizing students' multiple intelligences and learning styles; (8) Lectures must be interdisciplinary; (9) Lectures must motivate, challenge, and inspire; and (10) Lectures must summarize and preview the next lecture.
