Building Opportunity in Mississippi through Higher Education: A Report from the Steering Committee for the Mississippi Leadership Summit on Higher Education.
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges
The Steering Committee of the Mississippi Leadership Summit on Higher Education anticipates a future in which Mississippi is regarded as a state of promise and opportunity. This report discusses the priorities and initiatives of a shared framework for educational, economic, and social progress. All of Mississippi's children and their families, as well as educators, business persons, professionals, the media, and communities will understand and embrace the value of education and training. The state should launch a broad public education campaign to this end. All of Mississippi's children should start school ready to learn, which calls for expanded and improved prekindergarten programs. Mississippi needs to boost the quality of teaching through strengthening university and school partnerships, developing a strategic research plan, improving advanced placement programs, and improving teacher education. Mississippi needs to increase the high school graduation rate and college participation through a number of efforts. Mississippi also must increase participation in adult lifelong learning, worker training, and professional development activities. As a final objective, Mississippi needs to increase its support for university-based research and development and the preparation of students for careers in the new economy. (SLD)
