In January through April 2007, the Children's Trust sponsored a population-based survey of parents of children ages birth through 17 in Miami-Dade County to provide a baseline of data on child health and well-being, and to discern unmet needs for services in the Trust's primary impact areas and strategic investments. The survey was conducted by Child Trends and Florida International University's Institute for Public Opinion Research. The survey is representative of all children living in households in Miami-Dade, and within five geographic regions of the county: Beaches, Northeast, Northwest, Kendall/Near South, and Far South. The sample also supports estimates for children in three age groups: birth to 5, 6 to 11, and 12 to 17, and for three mutually exclusive racial/ethnic groups: Hispanic, white, non-Hispanic; and black, non-Hispanic. The scientifically drawn sample yielded a high response rate and high levels of precision for the population estimates. Selected findings and implications from the survey are highlighted in this summary; all comparisons from the survey discussed here are statistically significant.
