This handbook is designed to assist classroom teachers and administrators in organizing, planning, and implementing a comprehensive safety program K-12 at the local school or district level. The handbook is organized in three sections. The first section contains 28 units for the elementary level that cover the following topics: first aid training; choking; fire safety; hurricane safety; water safety; Halloween Safety; bicycle safety; firearms and hunting; buses and cars; electrical safety; flood safety; child care; Christmas safety; fireworks and explosives; playground, park, and recess; camping and hiking safety; school building safety; walking, jogging, and sign recognition; severe weather safety; in-home safety; fractures; bleeding; poisons; boating safety; artificial respiration and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation; tornado safety; burns; and bites and stings. Each unit contains one or more objectives, concept, and student activities. Most units are designed for use during one week. The second section of the handbook contains seven units for use on the secondary level. Units cover the following topics: in-school safety, safety in the home, recreational safety, natural disasters, science laboratory safety, driver education and traffic safety, and vocational education safety. All but the last unit consist of 1 to 13 projects for students to conduct, each listing objectives and activities. The last unit, on vocational education safety, lists the responsibilities of each level of personnel involved in vocational education safety. The final section of the guide provides a list of suggested resources including names and addresses of businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations that can be contacted for print and audiovisual aids for teaching safety concepts.
