Roy J. Stewart made two very significant contributions to Deaf America. He was a key member of a Gallaudet alumni committee (along with Harley D. Drake, class of 1904, and Frederick H. Hughes, class of 1913) that raised seed money for the construction of the Edward Miner Gallaudet Memorial Library, which was influential in Gallaudet's attaining accreditation in 1957. He also chaired the National Association of the Deaf motion picture committee that preserved early American Sign Language on film. Through his and others' efforts, some fifty films were made, featuring "Old Masters of the Sign Language." A few of these films were made as early as 1910, many were filmed in 1913 and they continued to be made into the 1940s. Stewart led efforts to have copies made of the master prints and the master prints placed in storage at the Library of Congress. This article pays tribute to his contributions to the Deaf community.
