Serendipity and Stewardship: Teaching with the Spirit in a Secular Classroom
Hall, Bradford J.
New Directions for Teaching and Learning, n120 p37-45 Win 2009
Can one appropriately teach with the spirit in a secular classroom? This chapter addresses the question by exploring how the concepts of serendipity and stewardship encourage a form of spirituality that is inclusive and appropriate for the university setting. Serendipity and stewardship work hand in hand. Stewardship resists the temptation of turning serendipity into tricky techniques. Serendipity helps to avoid a stewardship that slips into misguided dogma, and it allows the students themselves to become stewards in their own learning. The author does not believe that serendipity and stewardship are panaceas for classroom effectiveness, or that he has mastered them. However, as he has tried to put stewardship and serendipity into practice, the author has learned from unexpected sources and felt a greater connection to his students and the world around him.
