Safety, Efficacy, and Legal Issues Related to Dietary Supplements
Powers, Michael
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v18 n1 p30-34 Sep-Oct 2004
This article focuses on the effects of dietary supplements on collegiate and adult populations. Anabolic steroids, amphetamines, and other drugs have been used for decades to improve athletic performance. However, the legal issues and dangers associated with these drugs have resulted in reluctance by many athletes to use them. Because dietary supplements are considered natural and are available without prescription, there is a misconception that they are healthy and safe. While there are numerous supplements marketed to improve performance, the more popular are classified as either muscle builders or fat burners. Here, the author describes the drugs used for muscle builders and fat burners. He calls for coaches, physical educators and health care professionals to educate athletes as to the efficacy, safety, and possible negative side effects of dietary supplements. He further adds that before using dietary supplements, three questions should be asked: (1) Is it legal?; (2) Is it safe?; and (3) Does it work?
