Factors Preventing Women's Advancement in Management in Turkey
Sanal, Mustafa
Education, v128 n3 p380-391 Spr 2008
This article examines the reasons why there is relatively very small number of woman administrators in public and private sector in Turkey. We have tried to reveal the factors preventing women's advancement up the organizational ladder. Although there are no legal obstacles against woman administrators in Turkey, such factors as gender discrimination, male dominancy, traditional, cultural and social structure and understanding, and domestic violence are among the major factors against women's advancement. Besides these extrinsic factors such intrinsic factors as women's reluctance to occupy higher rank position, avoiding the responsibility, committing themselves to their spouses and children are also effective on women's career. Compared with the condition of women in the past, although these problems persist, regarding with the status and social roles of women positive changes, albeit at a very low scale, could be observed in modern Turkey.
