"I Was Scared to Be the Stupid": Latinas in Residential Academies of Science and Math
Sayman, Donna
Multiple Voices for Ethnically Diverse Exceptional Learners, v15 n2 p22-35 Fall 2015
This study examines the experiences of Latinas in state residential academies of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Goals of this project focused on understanding their experiences and identifying factors leading to the decision to enroll, along with issues contributing to retention. These schools represent powerful opportunities for students to begin a successful path toward postsecondary STEM degrees and employment. A crucial step toward achieving equity in the STEM fields may begin with determining successful strategies to attract more Latinas to residential STEM academies along with factors involved in gifted education programs. Compelling themes from this study are related to resilience and self-esteem.
