Prekindergarten District Report, 2001-2002: Report of the Detroit Public Schools. A Condensed Format.
Washington, Joyce A.
This report of the Detroit Public Schools compiles data analysis of prekindergarten children's entry level skills, a 1-month follow-up assessment, and an end-of-the-year skills evaluation. The report contains information on the growth and development of 3- and 4-year-old prekindergarten students in the Michigan School Readiness Program and Head Start/Title I students within 4 learning domains: social/emotional development; physical development; health, safety, and nutrition; and cognitive development. Participating in the assessments were an average of 6,513 students in the 3 assessment periods for the 2001-2002 school year. Findings revealed that at least 50 percent of students were rated by their teachers as demonstrating the highest proficiency levels in all noncognitive domains. Students made the greatest growth in the physical development domain (fine motor skills). The least growth was shown in the cognitive development domain of shapes and numerals, with the proficiency level indicating a loss of about 28 percent for the 2001-2002 school year. Findings suggest a need for increased emphasis on developing cognitive skills, including matching and identifying color, shapes/numerals, and letters. (KB)
