When the author came to Villa Park High School in Orange County, California back in 1998, having just finished fourteen years in an East Los Angeles school, she expected to find communication technology already operative. It was just beginning at Bell High School where she had been, in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), with a Video Class and Video Yearbook underway, but in this more affluent school she thought there would be an established curriculum ready to go. She was wrong. She realized then that it makes no difference the location of the school, what matters is the time elapsed in the history of an industry. This article describes how the author developed a course for Television Production at Villa Park High School in which learners get the Fine Arts credit for the course. The course incorporates a study of the components of the studio, text use to develop depth and appreciation for the intensely complex nature of the equipment, initial forays into short subjects like advertisements, historical perspectives of the electronic media, written reports on past productions and selected directors and their styles, and ongoing weekly studio productions once the students have shifted through the jobs and settled into their chosen niche. Although the course description, which may be accessed through orangeusd.k12.ca.us, roughs in a week-to-week and month-to-month progression, the nature of the course varies widely depending on certain factors including the availability of equipment, studio time, and professionals to shadow.
