STARS: A Year in Review
Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education
The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System[TM] (STARS) is a program of AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. AASHE is a member-driven organization with a mission to empower higher education to lead the sustainability transformation. STARS was developed by AASHE with input and insight from the higher education community. STARS provides institutions with a standardized assessment tool to evaluate their progress toward sustainability. The system includes 139 environmental, economic, and social indicators, which are divided into four categories related to campus activities: Education & Research; Operations; Planning, Administration & Engagement; and Innovation. AASHE released its first annual "STARS: A Year in Review" on April 14, 2011. This report details the sustainability efforts found in the inaugural submissions to the STARS, such as sustainability research opportunities, sustainable dining efforts, and campus-wide social justice initiatives. Thirty-seven institutions submitted their STARS Reports in time for inclusion in the review. There are more than 200 additional institutions participating in STARS that will be submitting reports for a rating in the coming year.
