For several years, the author has been working with colleagues in the Northern California Writing Centers Association (NCWCA) and the Stanford Writing Center to build bridges between college and high school writing centers. The writing center at Stanford defines one of its central goals as "celebrating a culture of writing" for all members of the Stanford community, and they have been working to extend that mission beyond the campus and into surrounding communities. The NCWCA has a large and active membership, and they also want to expand their activities and offer resources to new communities. High schools, with their abundance of teenage creativity and college-bound students, seem an obvious choice. In this article, the author provides descriptions of several projects that the Stanford Writing Center has been involved with to build writing center relationships with regional high schools and a brief evaluation of the qualities that make these relationships work.
