De-Stressing High-Stakes Testing for NCLB
Fedore, Heidi
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v71 n6 p23-28 Feb 2006
It is readily apparent that testing raises academic standards at both the state and the federal levels. The three Rs currently touted as aims for school improvement--rigor, relevance, and relationships--can be applied to testing as well. The connection between standardized testing and rigor can be easily made, while the relevance of testing is more difficult to see, however, because testing usually involves imposing an outside influence over student performance. But the relationships between staff members and students can be the most influential element in bringing out the best in them. In this article, the author comments on standardized testing in schools.
