Pre-Columbian Settlements and People. Grade 4 Model Lesson for Standard 4.2. California History-Social Science Course Models.
Wendling, Laura
In this unit, fourth graders study the indigenous people of California and the state's four geographic regions. Looking at the indigenous people of California geographically allows students to see the relationship between the environment and the American Indian culture. Historical empathy is fostered as students observe the interdependence of these pre-Columbian people in a historical and geographical setting. This unit examines the unique lifestyles that the indigenous people of California developed that were determined by their physical surroundings. Suggested time for unit implementation is 6 class periods. The lesson plan presents adaptations for the teacher's classroom; discusses the significance of the topic; lists focus questions; features literacy links; and provides information and student activities, dividing the topic into: "Beginning the Topic,""Developing the Topic," and "Culminating the Topic." The lesson assessment is integrated with the instruction and occurs throughout the lessons; the focus questions provide a framework for the evaluation of the unit. Extended/correlated activities are suggested. Resources are listed for the sample topic and for other topics. Appended are sample worksheets and guidelines for teaching about American Indians. (BT)
