[CAS General Standards 2012]
Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education
The mission of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) is to promote the improvement of programs and services to enhance the quality of student learning and development. CAS is a consortium of professional associations who work collaboratively to develop and promulgate standards and guidelines and to encourage self-assessment. This paper presents CAS Standards and Guidelines. Each CAS standard contains 12 common criteria categories (referred to as "general standards") that have relevance for each and every functional area, no matter what its primary focus. In addition to the general standards, all functional area standards are comprised of both specialty standards and guidelines. Guidelines are designed to provide suggestions and illustrations that can assist in establishing programs and services that more fully address the needs of students than those mandated by a standard. A list of references, readings and resources is included. [Patricia Carretta was the Contextual Statement Contributor for this document.]
