Teaching a La Cart: Music on Wheels
Barrett, Joelle
Teaching Music, v12 n5 p28 Apr 2005
In this article, the author shares her experiences with teaching room-to-room or "from a cart". Depending on the building's structure, she often carried percussion instruments up and down stairs, pushed full-size pianos in and out of rooms, and transferred student books from one classroom to the next, doing what she thought was her job.Teaching from a cart is not an acceptable method of teaching, but it is better than the alternative of having the music program cut when a building becomes overcrowded. The author offers advice on how to make the best of the challenge. The information in this article comes from more than two dozen music teachers, from research, and from personal experience. One of the main challenges is figuring out how to move all the the required materials from room to room. Creativity and flexibility are mandatory resources. The right tools can vastly improve efficiency and reduce physical and emotional stress. Good communication with all involved--students, parents, faculty, school staff, and administrators--can make the difference between success and failure.
