Dance Theatre of Harlem--Theater Activity Packet.

Intended to complement the New York City communication arts curriculum, this packet introduces young students, guided by the classroom teacher, to a dress rehearsal performance of the Dance Theatre of Harlem ballet company. The packet is one of a series in the "Early Stages" program, a joint effort of the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting and the Communication Arts Unit, the goal of which is to expose students to a variety of theater experiences so that they will become as familiar with live theater, dance, opera and concerts as they are with movies and television. The first section of the packet includes informational material for teacher and students about the performance location (Lincoln Center), about the Dance Theatre of Harlem, and instructions in audience etiquette. The second section explores dance and the ballet in detail, with classroom activities designed to heighten students' interest in the performance by adding to their knowledge of every facet of the production. The packet concludes with curriculum activities for young theatergoers, including guidelines for classroom dance critics. Appendixes contain a short history of the ballet, a glossary of theater terms, resources for teachers and students, and information about Dance Theatre of Harlem and its children's ballet school.
