Teacher Careers and Career Perceptions. Teacher Careers and Career Perceptions in the Secondary Comprehensive School.
Lyons, Geoffrey
Teachers (n=122) from 5 secondary comprehensive schools in England and Wales were interviewed to find out how a teacher seeks a career within a school, what teachers perceive occurring within the school, and how this relates to the rapid and substantial structural change that is occurring in secondary schools. Data were organized using a theoretical model principally derived from the work of Everett Hughes, Julius Roth, and Howard Becker. This model proves useful in describing and explaining the career behaviors identified, and in understanding how schools become the source of different careers for the teachers who work in them. Chapters of this book include: (1) Introduction; (2) Research Background; (3) Timetables, Maps, Strategies, and Sponsorship; (4) Career Stages and Gate-Keeping Devices; (5) The School as a Source of Different Careers and the Consequences for Teachers; and (6) The Picture in Perspective. Tables are included in the text of the book. (JMK)
