The present study re-analyzed data from a previous study in order to explore the issue of re-invention of innovations in the process of implementation by organizations following recommendations from consultants. It was hypothesized that ideas with certain characteristics would be more likely to be re-invented than adopted without change. The following variables were considered: complexity (number of people, cost, time), specificity, subject of the idea, and flexibility. Measures of utilization were made approximately two months following the consultation (T1) and again two months later (T2); chi square analyses were performed for both T1 and T2. Although not all analyses reached the .05 level of significance, the overall results suggest that those ideas which are re-invented are those which require greater rather than lesser effort. Re-invention occurs nearly as often as adoption with no change. Re-Invention is more likely to occur in cases where innovations are more complex, when innovations are irreversible, in situations where a consultant does not take active control or play a major role, and in group sessions which are relatively unstructured.
