Developing Motor and Tactical Skills in K-2 Physical Education: Let the Games Begin
Oslin, Judy
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v15 n3 p12-14 May 2004
Most motor development experts, teacher educators, and physical educators agree that the development of fundamental motor skills ought to be the focus of primary level (K-2nd grade) physical education. Given the limited number of days allocated for physical education in most elementary schools, ensuring that all students learn 200 or more fundamental motor and sport skills can be particularly challenging. The purpose of this article is to suggest the use of modified games as an efficient and effective means of integrating multiple skills, movement concepts, and game tactics. Perhaps the biggest advantage to using a modified or conditioned game as the central organizing feature of a lesson is that it has the potential to turn students on to the whole game. Students may then become motivated to improve their game performance and play at a competitive level, or they may choose to play and enjoy the game with the skills they have. (Contains 1 figure.)
