Developing Confident Softball Catchers
Kellers, Peggy
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v17 n4 p31-34 Mar-Apr 2004
Training softball catchers is challenging. The nature of the position makes it one of the most difficult to play because of the breadth of a catcher's responsibilities. Although the demands on a pitcher or other players are significant, their roles are less complex than the catcher's, who is actively involved in the game at many different levels and in various roles. One of the challenges facing coaches is to find an athlete with a unique set of qualities for the position. The physical abilities of a catcher include good hands, quick reactions, mobility, and strong arms and legs. In addition, the player needs to be a stable leader capable of making quick, intelligent decisions--in other words, a take-charge person. Given these qualities the catcher has the potential to become confident and competent in meeting the challenges of the position and in developing skills. This article discusses how coaches can help develop the skills and confidence of softball catchers. (Contains 1 table.)
