The Organisation of Secondary Education.
Wilson, J. A.; Spelman, B. J.
This study, part of an ongoing effort to determine the future structure of secondary education in Northern Ireland, surveys teacher attitudes on the organization of secondary education. Questionnaires were sent to a sample of primary, secondary, and higher education teachers. Teacher opinion was divided most strongly with regard to the present bipartite system of selective grammar and non-selective secondary schools, irrespective of whether selection for the former took place at age 11 or two years later. Teachers were least attracted toward any form of a wholly non-selective system. The three alternatives which proved most popular with all teachers were a system of 11-16 comprehensive schools followed by transfer to separate academic sixth form and technical colleges, a system of 11-16 comprehensive schools followed by transfer to sixth-form colleges providing both academic and vocational courses, and a two-tier system of junior and senior high schools with selective transfer at age 14+. Since it was clear that those teachers who favored one type of sixth-form college structure also favored the other, it can be concluded that within each of the three sectors, as well as overall, popular choice lay between a structure based on selective transfer at age l4+ and a structure based on academic/vocational transfer at 16+.
